Fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants mom Jennifer Magnuson knew her spoiled suburban brood needed a wake-up call—she just couldn’t find the time to fit one in. But when her husband was offered a position in India, she saw it for what it was the perfect opportunity for her family to unplug from their over-scheduled and pampered lives in Nashville and gain some much-needed perspective. What she didn’t realize was how much their time in India would transform her as well.

A combination of Eat, Pray, Love and Modern Family, with a dash of Chelsea Handler thrown in for good measure, Peanut Butter and Naan is Magnuson’s hilarious look at the chaos of parenting against a backdrop of malaria, extreme poverty, and no conveniences of any kind—and her story of rediscovering herself and revitalizing her connection with those she loves the most. In India, after years of parenting under a cloud of anxiety, Magnuson found a renewed sense of adventure and fearlessness (a discovery that was totally worth the many months of hiding anti-malarial medication in her kids’ morning oatmeal), and started to become the mother she’d always hoped to be. Hers is a story about motherhood that will not only make you laugh and nod with recognition—it will inspire you to fall in love with your own family all over again.

Peanut Butter and Naan Stories of an American Mom in the Far East eBook Jennifer HillmanMagnuson

This book is about one Nashville family's move to India. It's similar to a another favorite book, French By Heart, which is about a family who moves to France, from, of all places, Greer (yes, Michelin was involved). Anyway. This book was fantastic, and it touched on a lot of the experiences we went through as temporary expats - but theirs was even more extreme. At least France is a first-world country (in some ways, ahem, even nicer than the U.S.). Magnuson is brutally honest, touching, and really, really funny - she reminds me a lot of Jen Hatmaker. My only complaint was that the book was too short - surely after nearly a year in India the family had accumulated more stories than were told in its 196 pages. This is a great read that makes you re-think your priorities.

Peanut Butter and Naan Stories of an American Mom in the Far East eBook Jennifer HillmanMagnuson Reviews

Both heartwarming and hilarious, Jennifer's stories of navigating a foreign land and the culture shock that accompanies it, are inspiring and entertaining. This family makes the most of a unique opportunity, learning valuable lessons about one another and the bigger world outside of their comfortable existence back home. A fantastic page-turner!
If you love to travel or always wanted to do something spontaneous and spiritually fulfilling, this book is a great read. The book will have you wanting to leave your usual mental vacation and physically venture into uncharted territory, build unforgettable, life changing memories and experience the realities of life in a third world country. Highly recommended. 😊
Jennifer paints an incredible picture making a land that seems so far away feel accessible and comprehensible. She dives into the culture and takes us with her for every step of the journey with unabashed honesty. As a screenwriter, I'm always impressed with writers who can weave words together artfully, though sometimes they tend to get stilted and self important. In contrast, Peanut Butter and Naan has all the vivid imagery but doesn't lose sight of the basic human, sometimes flawed, qualities in the process. Well done!
There are some hilarious moments and great cultural observations in this book, which make it a fun and easy read. However, it felt like the author was just scratching the surface, and I would have liked something a bit more thoughtful in places. At times it felt like the book was skipping over large chunks of time.
An author who can cause her readers to both laugh and think deeply is indeed worth reading. Hillman-Magnuson openly bares what she views as her shortcomings as a mother and as an American in a way that is easy and interesting to read. Even those readers who could never imagine traveling to a third-world country, much less living in one with five children, will surely be able to relate to the author as she skillfully tells her story. I'm buying five more copies for Christmas presents right now!
Peanut Butter and Naan was a quick and enjoyable read. While I was laughing out loud at some of the family's foreign experiences, other pages left me inspired. Jennifer's voice is so honest and relatable and she willingly shares her own flaws. I was full of admiration for this large brood and the courage it took for the parents to uproot their comfortable lifestyle and plop thier family into southerner India. The book does not disappoint and I look forward to Magnuson's next literary endeavor.

If I have a complaint, it's that the book isn't long enough. ) I would have loved more, more, more stories! I can relate to the author's desire to *do* something, and the great need to have her children experience a very different world. Parent or not, though, the book is entertaining and inspiring. As I always do with well-written books, I highlighted several paragraphs that spoke to me; my favorite was this "Instead, I let my heart take the snapshot and begged the universe to never let me forget what this felt like." Those moments of utter awe are lovely and few.
